Double Tracked Trains Run on the left side Because?
It makes sense that they would in Britain. But it appears that trains prefer to travel on the left side of a double track in France and Belgium, possibly the Netherlands too. Why?
You are correct, it does make sense. In Britain as well as many other countries, historically railways have operated in public highways in various locations at different times. At one time there were literally dozens of roads with railway tracks in them in Burton on Trent as an example. It would have presented an impossible situation if the trains were going in a different direction to the rest of the traffic. Similarly in the USA there were and still are (Oakland CA for instance) situations where trains share the highway with the rest of the traffic. In France and many other countries, the British example was followed, but it has resulted in many anomalies. In Paris, the Metro trains are on the right, but the Reseau Express Regionale trains being true railways, are on the left. The former railway lines which have been converted to tramways have changed from left to right as they also have some of their tracks on public roads.
There is no validity to the assertion that steam locos’ driving position was on any particular side. It was purely at the whim of the locomotives designer. The majority of humans are right handed, so it is much more natural for a right handed fireman to fire the loco from the left side of the cab. The Great Western Railway standardised a right hand side driving position in spite of the fact that the signals were on the left. In the latter years of steam, British Railways standardised the driving position on the left.
